Wearing my new t-shirt after a great swim session this morning, and it occurred to me that Queen’s ‘A Kind Of Magic’ album pretty much describes a typical swim squad session.
One Vision
Start of the session, full of positivity and drive, ready for whatever coach throws at you.
“One man, one goal, one mission”
A Kind of Magic
Feeling great at the start of the session, technique and pace in harmony.
“One dream, one soul
One prize, one goal
One golden glance of what should be
It’s a kind of magic”
Pain Is So Close To Pleasure
Into the main set and it’s starting to get a bit tough so you have to dig in.
“When your plans go wrong
And you turn out the light
But inside of your mind
You put up a fight”
One Year Of Love
Last few intervals and things are really starting to bite …
“There’s so much left unspoken
And all I can do is surrender to the moment, just surrender”
Friends Will Be Friends
Your lane mates come to the rescue, giving you support and encouragement, pushing you on.
“When you’re through with life and all hope is lost
Hold out your hand
Friends will be friends
Right till the end.”
Who Wants To Live Forever
You’ve still got 30 minutes of the session left, should you keep going at this pace or save it for later in the session. Keep going!
“Who wants to live forever
Forever is our today
Who waits forever anyway?”
Gimme The Prize
A short recovery swim after the first set and you’re pumped, ready to go again.
“I am the one, the only one,
I am the God of kingdom come
Gimme the prize,
just gimme the prize”
Don’t Lose Your Head
It’s hurting, you’re tempted to sacrifice technique in the pursuit of speed. Don’t.
“Hear what I say,
Don’t lose your way”
Princes Of The Universe
You’ve done it! You’ve finished the session strong. What a feeling!
“I am immortal, I have inside me blood of kings,
I have no rival, no man can be my equal
Take me to the future of you all”
What do you think? Accurate description?!
