One of our Swim Squad swimmers, Kate, took on the 2 mile swim at the Great North Swim this weekend. This was her first open water event … and it’s fair to say it won’t get much more challenging than this!
Fridays swim programme was reduced, Saturday’s events were cancelled and today’s events just about went ahead. The official word on the event:
“Sunday’s forecast is better than Friday & Saturday’s, however conditions will still be challenging, with gusts of wind and choppy water.”
How was it?
“Never experienced anything so difficult with the weather. The wind was awful. Completed the 2 miles in 1 hour 10 mins!”
Pleased?
“Extremely proud of myself.”
What will you remember most about the event?
“The build up this morning, and being surrounded with other swimmers at the warm up. Loads of first timers which made me feel at ease. The buzz / atmosphere from everyone really got me going!”
Has the Swim Squad helped?
“Just wanted to say thank you for the support and push you’ve given me from Swim Squad the past couple of weeks. I know I’ve only been with your squad for about a month but it has definitely helped. I had your voice in my head throughout the swim, ‘accelerate’ ‘pace’ 😆”
Did the conditions and the difficulty put Kate off? No chance!
“It was definitely an experience & I cannot wait for the next one! Thanks again coach 🤗”
Congratulations on a fantastic open water race debut!
👏👏👏
