“I want to improve my swim”
For most swimmers, my advice, generally, would be …
1. Swim Frequency
The more you can swim, the better. Whilst it’s not quite as simple as the more you swim, the better you become … there is quite a strong link between the two! Twice per week is better than once. Three times per week is better than two. Four times per week is better than three!
2. Content of Sessions
Make sure the sessions are well structured and contain enough ‘work’ in them! Big main sets should be the norm. Changes of pace and working at different intensities are key too.
3. Effort & Intensity
This is partly linked to the ‘content of sessions’ above, but also about how hard you work during the sessions. Make sure you work hard and push yourself out of your comfort zone regularly! You don’t have to smash yourself every session, but regularly pushing hard is a good thing.
4. Swim Technique
Working on some key aspects of technique is important. I would try and identify a couple of areas to work on in mostly full-stroke swimming – rather than lots of drills.
If you apply these principles to your swim, I reckon you’ll see some big improvements!
