“Why Do You Offer Swim 1-1s?”
Interesting question!
Somebody asked me recently, “why do you offer 1–1 swim sessions? They are quite time intensive, they don’t finish until 10pm and you don’t make much money from them.”
Brutal.
This is very true, but …
Helping People
I love helping people. I love helping people swim. And sometimes it’s the smallest things that can make such a difference. It seems wrong not to help!
Life Changing
Sometimes one session can actually change a persons life!
No exaggeration.
I’ve met many a swimmer who, after a 1-1 swim session, have decided that they’ve made enough progress – or see their way to making more progress – to enter an event they previously didn’t think possible.
They have then gone on to great things and made swimming and triathlon an integral part of their life.

Leads To More
One 1-1 session often leads to much more. I have quite a few swimmers who have been in our Swim Squads for the last four or five years who initially came for a single 1-1 session. They enjoyed the session, made great progress and wanted to continue to improve – and enjoy – their swimming.
Opens Coaching Opportunities
A 1-1 swim session often gives the athlete an insight into my coaching style and manner and establishes credibility and trust. I have athletes who came for a 1-1 swim session – both in the pool and in the open water – who I now coach on their various swimming and triathlon adventures.

New Athletes
I meet new athletes all of the time. Top level athletes to people brand new to the sport. It broadens my experience and gives me an insight into the needs of the different athletes.
Experience Leads To Improvement
The broader my experience, the more I improve. The more swimmers I meet, the greater the variety of stroke-styles I see. This keeps me on my toes, finding different ways of explaining issues or corrections, and more creative ways of demonstrating.
The more I have to think, the more solutions are imagined. I like to think I become a better coach.
Exciting!
This might sound a little sad, but it’s quite exciting to meet a swimmer for the first time and within two or three minutes try and diagnose the main issues and then propose some solutions!
Any more reasons to love 1-1 swim sessions? What do you reckon?
