Pushing Limits!

“I’m on cloud nine!”

This was from a WhatsApp message from an athlete yesterday.

It was a particularly enthusiastic message, telling me how his benchmark 5k run performance had gone.

Context

A little context before we go any further.

This athlete has dedicated the year to training for triathlon, for his first Ironman. Lots of run-walk endurance runs, with some progression runs mixed in. Solid, consistent training. He had a great race in Bolton, pushing his limits, ringing the first time finishers bell and crossing the finish line. Since then, he’s had a little time off and has just resumed training again.

The benchmark 5k was a chance for us to see where he is and to reset his training zones.

How did he get on?

Woah!

“Destroying Limitations”

Let me quote his message.

“Bryan … I can’t believe it! For the past six years, since I’ve been running a bit more seriously, I’ve never been able to get under that 20 minute mark. I’d genuinely started to think that maybe it wasn’t possible. I’ve come close, but thought I’d reached my limit.

To do that today, and not only beat it but smash it, after a month or so since the Ironman, and my training only really starting to get back on track in the last week, I can’t believe it.

I did it!

How’s that for a benchmark? Looks like I’m going to need a new target!

Thank you for once again helping me destroy my previously perceived limitations.”

This performance – and message – just made my morning!

  • A massive personal best.
  • A glass ceiling shattered.
  • Limitations stretched further.
  • Belief renewed.
  • Fire of enthusiasm burning brighter.

Do you have any self-imposed limits? Any targets that seem just out of reach? Which barriers are you going to break through this year?

Take inspiration from this athlete.

Take pressure off yourself, trust in the process and watch those times tumble!
