Race Review: Ironman Lanzarote
Brilliant racing from Graham in Lanzarote!
Another Ironman Lanzarote medal to add to his collection.
This is the third time Graham (55-59 AG) has raced in Lanzarote – and I’ve had the privilege of helping and coaching him for all three races.
- The first time was about completing it, and beating the cutoffs. He finished his first one in 16.45 (and was a little bit broken!)
- The second one was to learn lessons from the first and enjoy the race a bit more. He finished that one in 16.15 – feeling much better than the year before.
- This year, he wanted to keep improving, and go under 16 hours. Graham finished in 15.53, with a 1.19 swim and a run that was 22 minutes quicker than last year.
Awesome!

Race Reflections
What did Graham think?
“What a day!
Swim was a right scrap, loved it, never thought I’d ever say that about swimming!
Windy on the bike – quite a bit stronger than last year and think I was a bit slower. A few cramps after 50 mile 😬, but felt good coming off for the run.
Hit cramps – hamstring and quads – right from the start, so knew the run was gonna be tough. Cramps eased up a bit after 10 miles but always running on the edge of cramping.
Kept going with a few of your check in / mantras – so a sub 16 hour time completed which was my number 2 goal.
Great day. Loved it.
Thanks for all the help and messages of support.”

Great Race Management
I messaged Graham and said how well I thought he managed the race …
“I felt the race went great. I had to change strategy throughout (a point you raised in a blog post) but never got to the point of “can’t do this or this is definitely the last time 🤔” more “how do I get through the next 60 mins?” and “what can I do now?”
I love this. We can all learn something from Graham’s attitude here.
Next Year … ?
I wonder when Graham is going to sign up to the 2025 race …
