Swim Squad 2025: A Year of Heroes, Breakthroughs, and Inspiration

2025 has been a year to remember. A year of firsts, comebacks, breakthroughs, personal bests, epic adventures, and quiet triumphs. From cold water challenges, ultra-distance rides, marathon finishes, and Ironman milestones, the Squad has shown what it means to push limits, support each other, and celebrate every achievement – big or small.

This year, the stories of our athletes remind us that heroism comes in many forms. It’s not just the podiums or the PBs – it’s the courage, consistency, patience, and spirit that makes this Squad truly remarkable.

Wow Moments That Stopped Us in Our Tracks

Some performances leave us gasping. Some make the lane cheer. Some moments leave the whole Squad quietly shaking their heads in disbelief.

Dan Coonan’s 57-minute Ironman swim:

“Has a swim performance ever received as much attention? When the clock stopped at 57 minutes, the whole Squad would have punched the air in delight. Be More Dan, always.”

Sammie at Ironman Leeds, finishing her final 400m with a grin:

“Watching her blast past the barriers reminded me what determination, courage, and pure joy look like. That turbo-charged finish was legendary.”

Sara’s 12-hour Time Trial:

“351 km at 29.3 kph in terrible conditions – just a ‘Jesus Christ, that’s impressive’ moment. From injury to crushing it on the bike, Sara showed what patience, persistence, and determination look like.”

Jon’s 32-minute swim at Ironman Mallorca 70.3:

“If Jon can do that, I wonder what is possible for me? From non-swimmer to holding his own in the fast lane – a moment that inspired the whole Squad.”

Nick Bennett at the Lakeland 100 Ultra Run:

“Just lining up at the start line shows courage, but taking it on head-first with bravery and determination was awe-inspiring.”

As we will see through these ‘awards’, there were many other moments: PBs smashed across disciplines, first Ironmans completed, ultra swims, runs and rides conquered, and podiums aplenty, reminding everyone what the athletes in this Squad are capable of.

Breakthroughs and Transformations

2025 was also about growth, breakthroughs, and pushing beyond what we thought possible.

Matt F consistently led by example:

“For motivation and inspiration, without doubt, Matt. Discipline, determination, and consistency in every session. He pushes us on rides and runs… an absolute gem!”

Mel transformed fear into triumph:

“Fred Whitton, cold water swims, joining the mermaids… not only has she overcome her fears, she’s made me a better athlete. Watching her approach to training and racing rub off on everyone has been brilliant.”

Jan, racing abroad for the first time, completed multiple podium finishes and even an ultra marathon:

“Squad wouldn’t be Squad without Jan. Her enthusiasm, dedication, and encouragement lift everyone around her. From world championship swimruns to ultra-distance challenges -incredible!”

Sara, coming back from injury, proved patience and persistence can yield extraordinary results:

“After an early season injury, she stayed patient and came out stronger. Her performance at Ironman Wales, the 12-hour TT, and consistent training inspired her entire lane.”

Lisa embraced new challenges, from swimming to running to triathlon:

“She stepped outside her comfort zone and inspired the whole squad to try new things, be braver, and support each other.”

David quietly impressed with his first Ironman:

“From being fairly new to swimming to completing Ironman Barcelona, his focus, determination, and calm approach made it a standout debut.”

Jo executed long-distance triathlons with consistency and pace:

“From swimming past pros in Mallorca to racing the ROC, she showed what careful preparation and belief can achieve.”

Flo, starting the year in lane 4, worked her way to lane 2 and excelled in Ironman Swansea 70.3:

“She’s gone from strength to strength. Watching her swim improve throughout the year was inspiring.”

Dani, juggling challenging race schedules, executed events with remarkable balance and consistency:

“She adjusted plans, managed hot races, and still pulled off podiums and PBs. Brilliant planning and effort.”

Everyday Heroes

Not every triumph is measured in PBs or podiums. Some of the Squad’s heroes are those who show up week after week, encouraging, supporting, and quietly leading by example.

Chris, battling some serious hip pain, still turned up every week with a smile and cheered everyone on:

“She’s quietly extraordinary, inspiring everyone without expecting recognition.”

Kathryn, recovering from multiple surgeries:

“She swims for the love of it and encourages others relentlessly – a true Swim Squadder.”

Ian, the “wave machine,” top counter, and lane steadier:

“We’d be lost without him. No more words needed.”

Anita, transforming from 30-minute technique sessions to full 90-minute sessions:

“Her dedication and progress have been remarkable – a testament to consistent effort.”

Gary, quietly enjoying the sport, smiling, and leading by example.

These athletes remind us that heroism isn’t only about finishing first –  it’s about showing up, encouraging others, and embodying the Squad spirit.

Moments That Inspire

Beyond PBs and medals, 2025 was about the moments that lifted the whole Squad.

  • Seeing someone master a lane they once struggled with.
  • Watching a teammate push through a wall while everyone cheers from the sidelines.
  • Witnessing a first Ironman finished, a dream race accomplished, a new level of confidence unlocked.
  • Sharing laughter, pride, and camaraderie along the way.

“Even if we rarely share a lane, people always check in, encourage, and lift each other. That alone makes the season worth it.”

“From Sara patiently recovering, to Matt leading by example, Jan tackling her ultra, Mel joining the mermaids, Chris cheering everyone – these are the moments that inspire week after week.”

Reflections on 2025

This year reminded us that success comes in many forms:

  • Breaking personal barriers.
  • Showing up when it’s hard.
  • Encouraging teammates.
  • Celebrating victories, both big and small.

The breadth of achievement in 2025 is staggering: first Ironmans, epic PBs, ultra-distance challenges, comebacks from injury, breakthroughs in swimming, and heroic support for others.

It’s the veterans, the first-timers, the quiet achievers, the relentless, the patient, the joyful -all proving that heroism comes in all shapes and strokes.

Looking Ahead

To every member of the Squad: thank you. Thank you for your energy, humour, resilience, and inspiration. 2025 has been unforgettable because of all of you.

Here’s to more PBs, more firsts, more “Wow!” moments, and above all, more Squad spirit in 2026.

And now, the nominations.

The Nominations

If there’s one thing that stood out as the nominations rolled in this year, it was this:

You couldn’t pick just one.

More than thirty members of our Squad took the time to write in – thoughtfully, passionately, and often at great length – and almost every message said the same thing:

“I could list ten more.”

“How do I choose?”

“Everyone deserves something.”

“The squad is bigger than the sum of its parts.”

And that’s exactly why I like thinking about these awards.

A Squad Full of Heroes

Across all the categories – Breakthrough Performance, Most Improved, Most Inspirational, Performance of the Year, Season of the Year, and so many more – the same pattern emerged:

Different athletes inspired different people, for completely different reasons.

  • Some were moved by the courage of a debut Ironman.
  • Some by a big comeback after injury.
  • Some by quiet consistency in training.
  • Some by the loud, brilliant, unforgettable race-day moments.
  • Some by the swimmers who transformed their technique, or the runners who found a new gear, or the cyclists who wouldn’t quit.

There was no single narrative.

No obvious winner.

No athlete who dominated every category.

Instead, the nominations painted a picture of a squad overflowing with stories worth celebrating – a whole year’s worth of determination, joy, breakthroughs, near-misses, comebacks, PBs, and moments of sheer brilliance.

The Volume of Love Was… Ridiculous

We had nominations for more athletes than ever before.

Some athletes were mentioned in three or four categories.

Some were highlighted for a single extraordinary moment.

And others – wonderfully – were nominated simply for being who they are:

“She inspires me every session.”

“He’s the reason I kept going.”

“Her attitude is incredible.”

“I want to race like him one day.”

“They make the squad what it is.”

This wasn’t just a list of performance stats.

This was a celebration of character – of people showing up for themselves and for each other.

A Community Worth Shouting About

One nomination summed it up beautifully:

“The Swim Squad community you have built is special. You’ve brought together like-minded people and enabled each member, whatever their age or ability, to feel part of it – to contribute, grow and benefit from the training and the camaraderie.”

And another:

“I have never regretted a minute of my time in the pool. The WhatsApps, the chats, the support – it’s the community that keeps me going.”

For all the outstanding individual performances this year – and there were dozens – the overwhelming theme running through the nominations was simple:

This Squad is something people are proud to be part of.

And that alone is worth celebrating.
