Swim Squad

The Swim Squad is a group swim programme and is designed and delivered to improve your technique and develop your speed. We will build your endurance and fine tune your open water skills.

The squad has periodised swim training – with different phases throughout the year to help you get the very best out of your swim training.

The sessions are based in a pool, but also has open water group sessions in the spring & summer months to help fine tune your swimming ahead of your big races.

The squad is aimed at all levels of triathlete and open water swimmers.


Key Features

The key features of the Swim Squad are:

◾️ A fully mapped out swim training programme, with different swim phases throughout the year.

◾️ A swim programme designed to help all levels of athlete progress.

◾️ Weekly swim sessions which fit into an overall swim programme and will have you peaking in time for your races.

◾️ Additional open water swim skills sessions throughout the year.

◾️ Some 1-1 work, where you will receive specific, individual attention on your technique.


Swim Squad Structure

One of the key features and benefits of the Triathlon Swim Squad is the focus on preparing triathletes for the end goal – race season. In doing this, we take a season long view with our swim sessions and split the year into five distinct swim phases.

Beginning in October, we start with a technique focus. We still include some strong swimming, but the focus is on the key aspects of swim technique. We work on some technique fundamentals and get our stroke working for us.

This is where we build our endurance and a lot of our strength – laying the foundations for the season ahead. We still include technique in this phase, but the focus is on conditioning, swim fitness and strength.

This is a short period of sharpening and building some speed. This adds some speed to our solid endurance and strength. You will definitely be in a good position to hit some new swim PBs after this phase.

We incorporate some open water skills into our swim sessions so we transition smoothly into open water / race season. Again, we still work hard, but we are perfecting our open water skills too.

We are absolutely ready to race during this period. Our focus will be maintaining fitness and strength, whilst also staying sharp. Fine tuning our swim pacing is be a feature of this phase. Swimmers can start at any point in the year and will still benefit greatly from the squad – so don’t worry about missing a particular phase.


The Swim Squad is based at the fantastic Huyton pool in the Knowsley Leisure & Culture Park, Longview Drive, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6EG. 

Currently, the sessions are on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Throughout the year we often have sessions running on Sundays in the 50m pool at the Liverpool Aquatics Centre.
