Swim Training Plans

As well as our Swim Squads and our online coaching, we also offer training plans designed to make you a quicker, stronger swimmer. These plans are designed specifically for you.

Recently, I wrote a 20 week swim training programme for an athlete taking on some long distance swims next year.

Four Week Blocks

I split the plan into four week blocks, each with a slightly different focus. Each block contains three weeks of building, followed by one week with an endurance focus.

Weekly Structure

Within each week, we have scheduled four swims per week and is a mix of technique, threshold, higher intensity VO2 Max, and strength endurance.

Progressing Blocks

The plan is designed to develop good swim fitness, strength and a little speed in the early stages, to more specific swim training as we move through each four week block of work.

This 20 week training programme cost the swimmer £100. For that, he should come out of the 20 weeks a strong, fast and efficient swimmer, confident of tackling the challenges ahead.

Below are some examples of the types of swim plan I’ve done previously.


Long Distance Swim Training Plan

You have a long distance swim coming up – such as Coniston, Ullswater, Windermere – but you’re not quite sure how to prepare for it. This plan is a mix of developing endurance, strength and efficiency. It is a progressive programme, with some good variation included, and includes a mix of pool and open water swimming.

16 to 20 weeks of three (or four) structured swim sessions per week, including a mix of pool and open water sessions. £100.

‘Improving Your 400m Swim Speed’ Plan

Improving your 400m time is about improving your speed, your ability to hold a strong pace and your endurance. Improving your 400m time means improving your triathlon swim – whether that’s 750m, 1500m, 1900m or 3.8k. This plan will be tailored to your ability and will help you become a better, faster swimmer!

Eight Weeks of three to four sessions per week tailored to your current swim ability. £50.

Twelve Week Swim Fitness Plan

You find yourself a little bit lacking in swim fitness and you have a race looming. It’s a common story! This plan is perfect to help you develop your endurance, whilst increasing your swim pace. You will feel stronger in the water and your swim confidence will increase. You will be ready to race!

Twelve weeks of three sessions per week. £50.

‘Top 10’ Swim Sessions

Generally happy with your swim training, but need a little inspiration in the pool? This is a 10 session plan – with some of our favourite and proven sessions to keep you busy! Consisting of three endurance sessions, three VO2 Max sessions and four Threshold sessions, this plan will add some variety – and a bit of spice – to your current training.

Ten sessions. £10.
