Over the last few weeks, our swimmers in the Swim Squads have been working on the the catch and pull, to better improve their pull in the water.
We’ve been trying to get a ‘high elbow’ catch position, to set ourselves up for a strong pull.
We’ve used two drills for this.
Fists. This is simply swimming with our hands closed into a fist. We want to use our forearm to pull water – and to do this, we need to keep our elbows high in the water.
Doggie Paddle. Again, this means keeping elbows high in the water to get our hands and forearms in place ready for the pull.
If you’re struggling with your pull, not holding much water, taking lots of strokes on each length, chances are you need to improve your catch.
After your warm up, do a few lengths using the drills above then progress into the main set – where you should continue to concentrate on your catch and see if it helps?
