Phase 1: Technical Phase

Writing the Swim Squad programme is well underway.

I’ve already mentioned that the Swim Squad programme will have five distinct phases through the year, to help us get ready for racing next year. If you missed that, have a look and see how we’re structuring the year.

Click Here To Learn About The Five Phases

The first phase is all about technique. Improving our stroke to enable us to become more efficient in the water and capable of building swim endurance, strength and speed in the months ahead.

This technique focus doesn’t mean 10-12 weeks of easy swimming! Technique, to me, doesn’t mean loads of slow drills. It means learning skills, stroke patterns, body posture and positions and then swimming at different paces. The ability to hold good form under duress will be key. We will be improving our technique whilst also developing swim fitness and strength.

Some of the technical aspects we will cover include:

Body Position & Posture

  • Long, streamlined stroke
  • Good head position
  • Effective kick to complement body position
  • Breathing in a way that keeps our stroke stable and balanced
  • Rotation through the water

Alignment & Swimming ‘Narrow’

  • Pulling that follows the correct path – not too wide or too narrow
  • Head position and head stability to keep the rest of the body aligned
  • Keeping the whole body aligned, including keeping legs controlled

Propulsion

  • Effective catch and set up of the pull
  • Solid hand and wrist strength
  • Ability to produce force
  • Acceleration through the pull and generating speed
  • Full length pull to maximise propulsion
  • Hand entry speed and position
  • Effective stroke rate

Quite a lot to cover!

The programme starts on 1st October.
