Tips For The First-Time Ironman

Enjoy The Moment

“The hard work is done with the months of training under your belt. The race is just your victory lap. Enjoy it, take in the moment”.

“Enjoy every moment. Most people aren’t racing to win so make sure you savour each moment that you’ve worked so hard for – whether that’s the goosebumps inducing “Thunderstruck” before the swim, or dancing along with the Sheephouse Lane Wrestlers up a difficult climb. When you cross that finish line you’re part of the top 1% of people in the world who can achieve something so difficult, so let the emotions run wild and allow yourself to bathe in the glory of becoming an Ironman”.

“Soak it all up. Take it all in. Make sure you take the time to do this and don’t get lost in the frenzy of the race and race day. Yeah, you’ve got to focus on your race and you’ve got a race plan and all that jazz, but take the time just to savour the day, the atmosphere, the support and everything. It’s going to be an incredible experience”.

“Enjoy it and soak up the atmosphere!”

“Smile, smile and smile all of the way round, especially when you see a camera!”

“Enjoy it. It sounds simple but you have earned the right to be on the start line with all the training you have put in. There will be nerves for sure but don’t let them stop you enjoying the moment. Will it hurt? Yes. Is it the hardest thing you will ever do. Probably. Is it worth it? Absolutely!! Oh, and get a great coach!”

Believe

“Keep trusting the plan ’til the end. There’s a reason Bryan has lots of clients that keep coming back for more”.

“Believe in yourself. A lot of work, time, sacrifice and effort has gone into getting yourself to the start line. Give yourself a pat on the back for getting there. The fun starts at the gun”.

Ian

“Believe in yourself. A lot of work, time, sacrifice and effort has gone into getting yourself to the start line. Give yourself a pat on the back for getting there. The fun starts at the gun. You may have missed chunks of training through sickness or injury for example, but you should tell yourself that you’re in the best shape possible and prepared for what’s to come. Good luck!”

“Believe you have done enough training – even though you haven’t put it all together yet.”

When It Gets Tough

“Gratitude. When things get tough, think about how much the people around you have sacrificed to support you. Thank them. Often”.

“If you’re considering giving up, you think the pain will stop and you’ll feel better immediately. The pain of giving up will never leave you. Don’t quit, dig deep, one more step”.

“When you want to give up, it’s just your brain, not your body. Keep putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward.”

“It’s going to be tough. There’s a reason it’s called Ironman. Don’t go too hard chasing times or too hard because you’re feeling good. There are so many variables that you can’t control on race day such as mechanicals, the weather etc. Your number 1 aim is to run down that red carpet to finish”.

“Embrace the suck! When times get tough during the race, both physically and mentally, remember to be present, acknowledge that it’s hard and know that you’ve put in the hard work necessary during training to get you through this”.

“Feed off the crowds as sometimes they’re better than taking yet another energy gel and – I can’t say it enough – just enjoy it. It’s a great day out – in a sadistic sort of way!”

“Something is probably going to go wrong in your day which will make you deviate from your meticulous plan. Sure you can be prepared in some respects for this (like they tell you to carry spare tubes, tools etc for the bike yada yada) – but just expect that at some point something will go wrong. Be prepared mentally for this and when it does go wrong, don’t let it get the better of you. And remember – it’s going to be an incredible experience”.
