When you see swimmers cruising past you and they seem to be putting very little effort in to their swim, yet you are working really hard and seemingly moving backwards, you wonder why.
What are they doing that I’m not?
This one can usually be summed up by two words …
Swim efficiency
Firstly, they will probably have a good body position in the water. They will not be dragging themselves through the water, but be swimming near the surface. Their legs will not be low in the water – or working really hard either.
(Have a look at the technique section on Body Position).
They will also be moving well with each stroke. They won’t take many strokes on each length, because they have a great feel for the water and a good ‘distance per stroke’.
(Have a look at the technique section on ‘feel for the water’ and ‘distance per stroke’).
Finally, they will probably have a ‘slow’ arm turnover and good stroke timing. They understand that swim pace is what you do underneath the water, rather than how fast you move your arms.
(Have a look at the technique section on ‘reach and rotation’)
Work on one or two of the technique areas suggested above, and notice how smooth and efficient your swim becomes.
