Perfect Swim Technique
One of our Swim Squad swimmers shared a video with me, thinking I would love it. It’s Florian Wellbrock – an Olympic Open Water 10k champion.
Our swimmer was right, I do love it! I thought I’d share it with you.
Poetry in motion isn’t it?
What Are We Looking At?
Body Position
His body position in the water is long, tall, and he is right at the surface, creating no drag. A straight line from fingertips to toes.
Hand Entry
His hand enters the water and then extends forwards, including a full extension of the arm, creating great length in the stroke.
Stroke Timing
Notice how he takes a ‘moment’ at the front of the stroke, not in any rush to start his catch and pull. He begins his catch and pull when the other hand is almost entering the water.
The Catch
Lovely high elbow, fingertips pointing to the bottom of the pool, creating a massive surface area with his hand and forearm, ready for the pull.
Propulsion
Look at the acceleration through the pull, going from a slow catch to a super-fast pull and push.
Rhythm
The stroke just has great rhythm and timing, never missing a beat.
Lots more to admire in the video. Let’s be honest, that is swim technique goals right there!
