Speaking to one of the athletes I’ve started coaching last night. Six weeks ago, he was genuinely worried about making swim cut offs at Ironman – which is why he got in touch with me!
We’ve worked together on a 1-1 basis (five sessions) on improving technique and efficiency. He hasn’t increased his swim volume or varied the training too much (that’s definitely the next step!).
This week he finished a hard set of 100m efforts and then set off on a steady 1,000m at the end of the session. Despite being fatigued to start this, he beat his previous best 1,000m time by more than four minutes and felt relatively fresh at the end!
That’s an improvement of 25 seconds per 100m – when he was already fatigued after his session – and felt pretty good at the end.
When we add some more specific swim sessions (varying intensities and distances) he is going to fly!
Great improvements in such a short space of time!
